Paseo Montejo… A Jewel of Mérida✨
One of the most emblematic areas of Merida is Paseo Montejo, the most important avenue in the city and extends from the Santa Ana neighborhood to the exit to the port of Progreso, named after Francisco de Montejo who was the founder of the city.
Paseo de Montejo: Palaces and mansions

Casas Gemelas
You will recognize them immediately, since as their name indicates, they are two very similar houses. The houses are the work of the European architect M. Umbdenstock and the engineer Manuel Cantón Ramos. One of the houses was acquired by Mr. Fernando Barbachano, who decorated it in the style of the time and it is preserved as such, and the other house, unfinished for many years, was finished by its current owner Mario Molina Fuentes.

Palacio Cantón
Yellow in color and with an impressive architecture, it will be one of the buildings you will turn to see. The mansion is named after its original owner, General Francisco Cantón, and the construction was the work of engineer Manuel Cantón Ramos, who was also in charge of the construction of the Twin Houses, hence the resemblance to them. It is perhaps the most important building on Paseo de Montejo, not only for its details, but also for its use as a Museum of Anthropology, which you can visit and have a very enriching tour.
Monumento a la patria
The city’s iconic monument stands at the third circle of Paseo de Montejo, uniquely carved in stone, making it Mexico’s sole masterpiece of its kind. Its 31 columns represent the 28 states of the Republic, two territories and a Federal District; and it depicts the stages of the Colony, Independence, Reform and Revolution with multiple symbolic characters and elements such as stone, water, fire and metals. This work of art marks the final stop on the Paseo de Montejo tour.

Casa Peón de Regil
